Wokam: Aru's Shortest "Outer Island" Escape

Wokam is the northernmost one of Aru's large islands. It has a little peninsula stretching out west just north of Wamar, which is both home to Aru's most interesting historical sights and very easy to reach from Dobo. This part of Wokam makes for a perfect day-trip from the capital, giving you a little taste of what the other outer islands of Aru are like.

Beaches

Looking across to Wokam from Dobo's harbour, you will notice several white sand beaches to the west. These beaches also stand the test of a closer inspection pretty well. The walk between the villages of Lamrang (just across from Dobo) and Kota Lama (see below) will take just past several of them. Away from the villages, they are more secluded and cleaner than the beaches on Wamar.

Kota Lama Fort

About an hour's walk west of Lamerang, the tiny village of Kota Lama (Old Town) is supposed to have been the Arus' original capital before that role was taken over by Dobo. It has the only fort ruin in all Aru, if not SE Maluku! Supposedly of Portuguese origin, he fort is seriously overgrown, but the  low, crumbling rectangular outer walls and the taller walls of the main building inside are still obvious enough. The tourist office in Dobo claims restauration work is in the pipeline, so the ruins may soon be recast in concrete as has happened all too often in North and Central Maluku.

The Old Church

Not far from the fort, the more substantial ruins of an old church are also claimed to be of Portuguyese construction.

Getting There and Around

Speedboats from Dobo to Lamerang, Wokam's closest village, cost just 5000 Rp per person for the short hop. While you could easily charter these to take you straight to Kota Lama too, the walk there from Lamerang is such a pleasant and easy one that I suggest walking at least one way. You will pass 3 villages, pretty beaches, gardens, and lots of friendly locals.

Reaching Wokam's more far-flung villages would be as complicated as any in Aru, with no regular connections from Dobo.

Accommodation
There is no formal accommodation anywhere on Wokam, so it is just as well that the Kota Lama area is easy to see on a day trip from Dobo. There are no places to eat either, but you can buy biscuits and soft drinks in the small stores in the villages.
