Hatta: Home to Banda's Finest Beaches

Known in the colonial era as Rozengain, this easternmost island in the Banda group is one of the most wanted day-trip destination among tourists based in Bandaneira. With no prominant role in history and thus no forts or other sights to speak of, Hatta's main drawing card are its beaches, probably the finest you will find in the Bandas. It boats very good snorkeling possibilities, too. Despite all this, it remains a very quiet place that offers no organized accommodation or indeed any other facilities whatsoever.

Main Attractions

Kampung Lama

Hatta's single village is divided into two sections, connected by a narrow, concrete footpath. Of the two, the older section, known as Kampung Lama (Old Village) is the one most tourists aim for, as it is right by the islands' finest beaches and good snorkelling spots. It is really just a small hamlet of a few dozen families, a old mosque, and spices laid out to dry along its main street in season.

The Main Beach

The beach right in front of Kampung Lama has the widest stretch of sand in Banda. It also offers easy access to the snorkeling spots along its reef, as even drop-off is quite close to the shore. Whether or not this reef really offers the Bandas' best snorkeling as you may have read in your guidebook will depend on the seasons though, with visibility pretty poor when the wind is blowing from the west.

The Western Beach(es)

For cleaner, quieter, and overall more appealing stretches of sands, round the cape to the west to reach the beaches facing Banda Besar. Once the day-trippers from Neira are gone, you are likely to have them all to yourselves.

Kampung Baru

Most tourists on a rushed day-trip stick to Kampung Lama, but those with more time should also check out the much larger "New Village", sitting on the shores of a large bay that is sheltered by extensive reefs at a distance from the shore, and by a tiny sacred island of sharp rocks. As this bay faces eastwards, snorkeling here can be much better than at Kampung Lama during the western winds' season, though the drop-off here is much further out and thus best reached by boat or canoe.

Getting There and Around
As usual, Hatta's boats travel to Bandaneira in the morning, returning midday, making them a fine, cheap way to reach the island if you are planning to stay overnight, but not if you are going for a day-trip. For the latter, you will need to charter a speedboat or larger wooden boat. Negotiate to include stops at eastern Banda besar or Pulau Pisang along the way.
Accommodation
Hatta now has a proper guesthouse named Rozengain Vitalia. As there is no mobile phone coverage on the island you can't book it in advance - just show up.
